The Temple of Philae is situated on a small island surrounded by the waters of Lake Nasser. It was originally on another island but had to be moved here to escape the rising waters after the Aswan High Dam was built. This side view shows the basic layout of most Egyptian temples. On the right is the grand facade with a gate leading to the interior court. The court (center of photo) is formed by a series of columns running from the facade to the entrance to the temple proper. On the left is the temple which has a series of rooms richly decorated with hieroglyphs. The final room is the holy of holies where only a select few---head priest, queen or pharoah--- could offer prayers and offerings to the gods. This temple was built in honor of the goddess, Isis, who found the heart of her slain brother, Osiris, on Philae Island. Many of the hieroglyphs depict this story.
